Surgery by age
Throw away your glasses and enjoy life fully at any age
At the Eye Centre Prague, we offer the option to eliminate dependence on glasses at any age. As our eyes age, there are different surgical methods for removing diopters that are suitable for various life stages.
20 - 40 years: Laser eye surgery
Laser surgeries are suitable for patients aged 20 to 40 who want to eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses, especially for distance vision. However, laser surgery can also correct farsightedness and astigmatism. The latest modern laser surgery methods are very gentle, painless, and are based on adjusting the depth of the cornea. The different types of these surgeries vary in how the cornea is uncovered and subsequently adjusted with a laser:
- the most modern and gentle type of laser eye surgery is ReLEx SMILE.
- the second most common method of laser surgery is femtoLASIK.
The most suitable type of procedure is recommended by the doctor based on a comprehensive examination, making it more or less tailored to each patient.
40 - 65 years: PRELEX surgery
Around the age of 40, the human eye begins to lose its ability to accommodate, or focus on close distances—this process is medically referred to as age-related loss of accommodation or presbyopia.
Gradually, individuals start to have difficulty reading and cannot avoid the need to wear glasses. If they also wear glasses for distance, they must constantly switch between them. The solution is the PRELEX surgery, during which the natural lens is replaced with an artificial multifocal or trifocal intraocular lens, allowing individuals to see clearly both up close and at a distance without glasses. The surgery is completely safe and painless. It is performed on an outpatient basis, lasts approximately 15 minutes, and most patients can see normally with the operated eye completely without glasses the very next day.
65 years and older: Cataract surgery with premium lenses
As the human eye lens ages, it gradually becomes cloudy, leading to what is known as cataracts. This condition obstructs the passage of light rays to the retina, making it feel as though one is seeing through fog. The incidence of cataracts increases with age, typically affecting individuals between 60 and 75 years old.
Cataracts cannot be removed by any means other than a quick and completely painless surgery. During this procedure, the original cloudy natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, which remains in the eye permanently for life. The advantage for you is that you have the option to eliminate glasses along with the cataracts, thanks to premium intraocular lenses:
- a multifocal lens provides sharp vision for both near and distance.
- a toric lens corrects astigmatism.
- an aspheric lens allows for better vision in low light conditions.
