Pre-operative examination

Diagnosis and initial examination before cataract surgery

Although your eye doctor has diagnosed you with cataracts, it is necessary to undergo a comprehensive examination at our Eye Centre Prague before the surgery. A detailed examination of your vision ensures the best possible outcome.

The detailed initial examination usually lasts about 60 to 90 minutes, is completely painless, and requires no special preparation. During the examination, your eyes will be dilated, so you will not be able to drive after the examination.

Please bring the following items to your examination:

  • Identity card
  • Health insurance card
  • Glasses you currently wear
  • List of medications you are taking
  • And optionally, a referral from your eye doctor (not required)

Complete procedure for pre-operative examination

1. Medical history

The medical history serves to gather important information regarding your health status and visual defects, including any eye conditions in your family.

2. Instrument Measurements

Using specialized equipment, your refractive errors will be measured, intraocular pressure assessed, and after dilating your eyes, an examination of the back of the eye will be conducted. Additionally, you will undergo biometric measurements to determine the parameters needed for calculating the new artificial intraocular lens to be implanted during cataract surgery.

3. Consultation and Examination by an Eye Doctor

The pre-operative examination concludes with a consultation with an eye doctor, who will conduct further eye examinations and explain the entire surgical process. The doctor will recommend the best solution for you and suggest the appropriate type of new intraocular lens.

Thanks to the possibilities of modern medicine, you can request the correction of other visual defects, such as astigmatism or refractive errors, at the same time as addressing the cataract.

Don’t hesitate to ask the doctor any questions during the pre-operative examination and discuss all the options for the surgery.
