Chief Doctor Zugar has reached the milestone of 25,000 cataract surgeries

Chief Doctor MUDr. Radan Zugar has reached an incredible milestone – 25,000 cataract surgeries! Thanks to his expertise, precision, and dedication, he is one of the most active surgeons in the Czech Republic.

Behind these numbers are thousands of satisfied patients whom Dr. Zugar has helped see clearly, giving them a new perspective on the world and a better quality of life. We extend our heartfelt congratulations and wish him many more successful surgeries and happy patients!

Dr. Zugar has been part of Eye Centre Prague since 2011, when he joined as a specialist and was appointed Chief Doctor later that same year. His primary focus is cataract surgery, performing over 2,500 procedures annually. In addition to his surgical work, he is also involved in outpatient care, specializing in retinal treatments, anti-VEGF therapy, and glaucoma management.

Dr. Zugar performed his first cataract surgery in 1999. At that time, the extracapsular lens extraction technique was still in use, requiring an incision over 10 mm, the removal of the entire lens (except for the capsule), and suturing the wound with about seven stitches. Since then, surgical techniques and equipment have evolved significantly. Today, cataracts are removed using phacoemulsification, where the lens is broken up with ultrasound and aspirated through a 2 mm micro-incision, dramatically shortening recovery time and improving safety.

In 2024, Dr. Zugar even performed surgery using revolutionary virtual technology. Inspired by the helmets of F-35 fighter pilots, this method allows surgeons to operate with maximum precision using an XR 3D microscope and specialized 3D glasses.
