Life without glasses is great
At Eye Centre Prague (OCP), we have many years of experience with laser vision correction. Our own doctors also come to us for laser surgeries. Not only do they trust our team, but they can also explain the procedure to patients from their own experience.
Lasers are used in ophthalmology for vision correction, particularly for myopia, where patients have difficulty seeing at a distance. They are also used to correct eye defects such as hyperopia and astigmatism. Laser vision correction is suitable for younger patients aged 18 to 40 who want to free themselves from dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
'It is always essential to remember that the suitability of laser surgery is individual and can only be recommended based on a comprehensive preoperative examination,' explains Dr. Andrea Janeková, FEBO, head physician of the cataract and refractive surgery center at Eye Centre Prague.
At OCP, we have been providing laser surgeries to patients since 2006 when the now outdated PRK method was used. Gradually, we have offered patients more modern laser methods—femtoLASIK and ReLEx SMILE."
Currently, 90% of patients at Eye Centre Prague undergo the procedure using the latest method, ReLEx SMILE. This is the gentlest and most precise method of vision correction. The name 'SMILE' is derived from the microscopic incision in the shape of a smile, which does not disrupt the integrity of the cornea. The entire procedure is performed using a femtosecond laser. Based on precise calculations, the laser separates a thin layer of tissue directly within the cornea that causes blurred vision, which the surgeon then removes from the interior of the cornea through the small incision shaped like a smile.
"The ReLEx SMILE method is the gentlest laser method. Unlike other methods, it uses only one so-called femtosecond laser, and the entire procedure is minimally invasive. The eye surgeon disrupts the surface of the eye in only 3-4 mm. As a result, there is rapid healing of the eye, nearly immediate improvement in vision, and patients do not experience as significant symptoms of dry eye syndrome as they do with older laser methods," explains Dr. Janeková, who performs ReLEx SMILE laser surgeries at Eye Centre Prague.
One of the doctors who also became a patient at Eye Centre Prague is Dr. Aneta Novotná, who underwent laser vision correction using the gentlest method, ReLEx SMILE. Before the surgery, Dr. Novotná had -4.0 and -3.5 diopters and -1.0 cylinder in each eye. Because glasses limited her, especially during sports, she preferred contact lenses. However, she later developed problems with dry eyes and could no longer tolerate the lenses.
"I had been considering laser vision correction since high school, but I was afraid. It wasn't until I started doing consultations before laser procedures and follow-up checks after surgery, and I saw the enthusiasm and satisfaction in my patients, that I decided to undergo the ReLEx SMILE laser method myself," shares Dr. Aneta Novotná about her decision to have laser surgery.
Dr. Aneta Novotná conducts consultations and preoperative examinations for laser vision surgeries at Eye Centre Prague. Thanks to her personal experience with laser surgery, Dr. Novotná can explain to patients even better how the entire process of the surgery works, what they can expect during the operation, how they might feel, and how their vision and life will change after the procedure.
"I am still thrilled with the surgery. My vision has sharpened beautifully; I don't need glasses for distance or near vision," shares Dr. Novotná about her feelings after the operation, adding: "It was an incredible experience for me from a medical perspective as well. Although I knew almost everything about the surgery, during the procedure, I suddenly became an ordinary patient experiencing the procedure like many others. There were worries and nerves. I'm glad I went through it myself. Now, when I consult my patients about laser vision correction, I can share my own experience and recommend the surgery with the best of knowledge."
Laser surgery literally changes the lives of patients at Eye Centre Prague. During follow-up appointments after the surgery, they express their excitement about their new vision and enjoy seeing clearly in all details every day from the moment they wake up and open their eyes
