School excursion at OCP: prevention and new knowledge

Last week, we organized an excursion for young schoolchildren at Eye Centre Prague. All the students and their teachers underwent comprehensive eye examinations, toured the various areas of the clinic, and learned about the anatomy of the eye, the development of vision, and basic eye disorders. It was a great experience for both sides, and we are happy that the children thoroughly enjoyed their time with us!

Excursion at the Eye clinic

At Eye Centre Prague, we have long focused on the area of education. We are very pleased to have contributed to the education of young schoolchildren who are currently in the 3rd grade. The class of our Dr. Andrea Janeková's daughter and our director Adam Janek visited our clinic as part of the excursions organized by their teacher in collaboration with parents. These excursions allow students to see and learn about what their parents do and what their work entails. This time, they had the opportunity to explore the field of ophthalmology.

Prevention

During the excursion, the children and their teachers underwent comprehensive eye examinations. First, our head nurse, Jana Barchánková, took care of them and performed device measurements on the autorefractor, which measured their diopters. They then moved on to the fundus camera—an instrument used for detailed imaging and photographing the fundus of the eye. The children learned about what each device measures and could watch the screens during the measurement and photography of their eyes.

Next, the children were examined by our optometrists and ophthalmologists. All the children had their distance and near vision checked, and the anterior segment of the eye was examined using a slit lamp, which is a special microscope that eye doctors use to examine and check the cornea, iris, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye. Here, the students were also able to assist the doctors during the examination—they could look into the microscope, operate the phoropter, and switch the letters on the visual acuity chart for their friends. All the children took home medical reports for their parents.

Education

In addition to the practical part, the excursion included an educational component, during which Dr. Janeková introduced the children to the basic anatomy of the eye, described how the eye and visual functions develop, and discussed the common eye defects.

The students, along with Director Janek, were then able to view the operating rooms through cameras. They got to see what the operating room looks like, how the surgical nurses prepare patients for surgery, and how the eye surgeon operates.

Both the practical and theoretical parts of the excursion were genuinely interesting for the children, and their enthusiasm for what they saw and learned was evident.

We would like to thank all the young participants and their teachers for coming to visit us! It was a wonderful experience for us as well, and perhaps thanks to this excursion, some of them will consider a career as a nurse or ophthalmologist in the future!
