Life without glasses is great
In recent years, many people have underestimated and postponed preventive eye examinations. The importance of prevention is highlighted by World Sight Day, which this year falls on October 13, 2022. World Sight Day takes place every year on the second Thursday in October and is organized by The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).
"World Sight Day raises awareness about eye health, emphasizes the importance of prevention, and encourages people to have eye examinations with a doctor. Just like last year, the theme is 'Love Your Eyes.' World Sight Day urges people to take care of their vision and ensures that accessible eye care is available for everyone, anywhere in the world," explains Andrea Janeková, an ophthalmologist at Eye Centre Prague.
Around the world, 1.1 billion people are affected by vision loss. Nearly 600 million people have difficulty seeing at a distance, and 510 million people struggle with near vision. With age, everyone loses the ability to focus on nearby objects, which can easily be corrected with reading glasses. It is projected that by 2050, up to 1.7 billion people will experience vision loss.
"Czechs Have Often Postponed Preventive Eye Examinations in Recent Years. The primary reasons for this have been the coronavirus epidemic and the unfortunate fact that many people still neglect prevention, addressing vision deterioration only through the purchase of cheap glasses at drugstores. Yet statistics clearly indicate that many serious eye diseases leading to irreversible vision damage can be prevented, and this is only possible through early diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Regular preventive check-ups are essential, even when a person does not perceive any problems," says Andrea Janeková, an ophthalmologist at Eye Centre Prague. She adds that there are several serious eye diseases that progress silently without symptoms, and deteriorating vision may indicate damage that is irreversible.

"Deteriorating vision and blindness can have a significant and long-lasting impact on our lives, which is why prevention is the least we can do for our eye health. At Eye Centre Prague, we are once again joining in on World Sight Day and recommend that everyone does not postpone the care of their eye health and schedules a comprehensive eye examination today," says Andrea Janeková, ophthalmologist at Eye Centre Prague.
