Scharioth macular lens – a new opportunity for patients with AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration).

Eye Centre Prague, as the first private eye clinic in the Czech Republic, performed the first implantation of the Scharioth macular lens in June, offering a new treatment for patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The surgery was performed by the expert guarantor and surgeon of Eye Centre Prague, Associate Professor MUDr. Jiří Pašta, CSc., FEBO.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss in older individuals. Particularly, its "wet" form progresses very quickly and can destroy vision within weeks or months. This condition is one of the most serious retinal diseases and is the leading cause of legal blindness in developed countries.

The current solutions for patients with AMD have involved assistive devices for the visually impaired, such as glasses, magnifying glasses, handheld magnifiers, and other enlargement aids or electronic devices. While these tools offer some help, they have several disadvantages, such as difficult handling, reduced field of vision, high cost, and social discomfort for patients. Another treatment option has been surgical solutions using special intraocular lenses, which, although functional, have their own drawbacks, including reduced distance vision, a smaller field of vision, adaptation issues, and the need for cataract surgery as part of the procedure.

The Scharioth macular lens is a completely new intraocular lens that brings to patients with AMD OCP Schariotova makulární čočkaa new chance for vision. It is an easy and safe surgical solution, where a bifocal intraocular lens with central optics is implanted into the better eye of the patient. The advantage of the Scharioth macular lens is the sufficient magnification that preserves the patient’s field of vision (it does not reduce it) and does not affect distance vision. Although this intraocular lens has been implanted in a very small number of cases worldwide and in Europe, the results so far suggest that the Scharioth macular lens could provide patients with AMD a new opportunity for better vision.

The first patient to undergo surgery with the new Scharioth macular lens at Eye Centre Prague was an 87-year-old woman from Most. After the surgery, the patient can now see clearly at close distances without optical aids. Regarding the course of this unique surgery, Associate Professor Jiří Pašta says: "The surgery went smoothly, and the initial results seem very promising. I believe that this intraocular lens represents a hopeful solution for near vision in patients with macular disorders."

For Eye Centre Prague, this marks another milestone in introducing new surgical methods in the private sector. "We are constantly striving to develop, improve, and, most importantly, bring the latest procedures and technologies to patients and Czech ophthalmology. I am therefore very pleased that our clinic was the first private center to perform the implantation of the Scharioth macular lens. Thanks to our technical and personnel capabilities, and our strategy of continuous improvement, we can once again expand our services with another advanced procedure," says Adam Janek, Director of Eye Centre Prague.
