Operation with a smile

Many people are reluctant to undergo eye surgery during the summer months. This is due to the myth that such surgeries should not be performed in the summer, and many people are also unwilling to give up any activities because of the post-operative recovery period. Now, however, is the ideal time to undergo laser eye surgery.

Anyone who wears glasses knows that they are really inconvenient, no matter the season. In winter, glasses constantly fog up, and it’s impossible to play sports with them. Contact lenses are also not ideal in the winter months. Constantly moving from freezing air to overheated rooms with dry air dries out the eyes, and contact lenses can then scratch and irritate them.

In summer, it’s not possible to wear sunglasses, swim with them, or safely play sports while wearing them. Also, contact lenses are not entirely suitable for swimming, as there is a risk of them being flushed out or an infection being introduced into the eye. The solution could be laser vision correction, which could literally change the lives of many people.

Laser vision correction

Laser vision correction is used to treat eye conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Laser eye surgery is suitable for patients aged 20–40 who have stable prescription for at least one year.

"It is important to keep in mind that the suitability of laser surgery is always individual and can only be recommended based on a comprehensive preoperative examination," explains Andrea Janeková, MD, FEBO, Chief Doctor of cataract and refractive surgery at Eye Centre Prague.

Surgery with a smile

At Eye Centre Prague, the most common method for correcting refractive errors is the state-of-the-art ReLEx SMILE technique. This method is extremely gentle, precise, and completely painless for the eye.

"The surgery is performed using a femtosecond laser, which, based on precise calculations, adjusts the required number of diopters without compromising the strength and stability of the cornea. Thanks to the minimal intervention, the healing and recovery time is very short, and the patient can return to normal life almost immediately after the procedure. On the day of the surgery, we recommend that patients relax and rest, but by the second day, their visual sharpness stabilizes, and they can return to work and regular activities. The eye almost fully heals within two weeks after the surgery," says Dr. Janeková.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia and is completely painless. The procedure lasts approximately 20 minutes, and both eyes are operated on the same day. The actual laser treatment takes just a few seconds. Patients notice the results immediately after the surgery, and most achieve 90% of visual sharpness by the second day.

The investment pays off for patients

Laser eye surgeries for refractive errors are not covered by health insurance, but the investment in laser surgery pays off for patients.

"Although it is a one-time higher investment, in the long term, it saves much higher costs for new glasses and contact lenses that people would have to buy for many years," explains MUDr. Janeková and adds: "At Eye Centre Prague, we are aware of the higher costs, which is why we offer patients the option to pay for the surgery in installments, completely interest-free."

Laser surgery literally changes the lives of patients at Eye Centre Prague. During follow-up appointments after surgery, they often express how thrilled they are with their new vision and enjoy their newfound sight every day, from the moment they wake up, open their eyes, and immediately see clearly in all details.
