Glaucoma treatment
Glaucoma, also known as green star, is a common yet very serious eye condition, often referred to as the "SILENT THIEF OF SIGHT." This is because glaucoma causes the gradual degeneration and death of the optic nerve, without the patient experiencing any noticeable symptoms.
Up to 50% of patients are unaware of their condition
In glaucoma, patients do not experience any pain or other discomfort, and serious damage to the optic nerve can occur unnoticed, potentially leading to complete vision loss. Therefore, regular eye examinations are crucial, especially for individuals over 40 years old.
The most significant and common risk factor for glaucoma is high intraocular pressure. However, the exact cause of glaucoma remains unknown.
Other risk factors include:
- age over 40, with the highest occurrence in people over 65
- genetic predisposition (heredity)
- other conditions such as diabetes, migraines, and stress
Glaucoma clinic at Eye Centre Prague
Eye Centre Prague utilizes a wide range of modern diagnostic methods not only for the early diagnosis of glaucoma but also for monitoring its progression over time. These methods include visual field testing and optic nerve assessment with a perimeter, analysis of the nerve fiber layer, optic nerve head, and anterior segment of the eye using OCT, and, importantly, anterior segment and trabecular meshwork analysis with the Pentacam Scheimpflug rotating camera.
The Glaucoma Clinic at Eye Centre Prague is led by Chief Physician Radan Zugar, MD.
Glaucoma treatment
In addition to establishing conservative therapy to lower intraocular pressure with eye drops, we also perform glaucoma surgeries.
