Blepharoplasty
Eyelid plastic surgery
At Eye Centre Prague, we perform plastic eyelid surgery designed to restore a refreshed appearance, reduce signs of fatigue, and at the same time improve the quality of vision.
The skin in the eyelid area is very thin and highly functionally exposed. For this reason, it is often where the first visible signs of ageing appear. The gradual loss of elasticity leads to excess skin and fat deposits, which negatively affect not only appearance but also visual quality, comfort when looking to the sides, and overall eye fatigue.
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is an effective solution that combines aesthetic improvement with functional benefits for vision.
Reasons for eyelid surgery
Functional concerns:
- Drooping upper eyelids may restrict the visual field, cause eye strain, or lead to headaches.
- Surgical removal of excess skin and reshaping of the eyelid restores its natural movement, expands the visual field, and significantly improves overall visual comfort.
Aesthetic improvement:
- Excess skin or fat bags on the eyelids often create a tired, sad, or ageing appearance that does not reflect how the patient feels.
- Eyelid correction restores a refreshed look, rejuvenates facial expression, and improves the overall harmony of facial features.
Psychological and social impact:
- A persistently tired or “droopy” appearance may reduce self-confidence and influence how a person is perceived by others.
- Eyelid correction helps restore confidence, creates a more open and energetic appearance, and improves overall well-being and quality of life.

How is the procedure performed?
Eyelid surgery is always preceded by a thorough examination and consultation with a doctor, who evaluates whether the procedure is appropriate and determines the most suitable type of correction.
The procedure itself is a relatively straightforward outpatient surgery performed under local anaesthesia and typically takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. During the procedure, the surgeon removes excess skin and, if necessary, excess fat. The resulting scar on the upper eyelid is placed in the natural crease, where it becomes virtually invisible when the eye is open.
Benefits of the procedure
- No general anaesthesia required – the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia only.
- Short procedure time – typically completed within 60–90 minutes.
- Natural-looking results – scars are fine and located in the natural eyelid crease, making them practically invisible.
“Recovery is usually very quick for most patients. Swelling and bruising subside within a few days, and stitches are typically removed after about one week. Patients usually return to their normal routine within one to two weeks,” says Lucie Frantlová, MD who performs eyelid surgery, adding: “It is important to follow specific precautions in the first few days — avoiding physical strain, protecting the eyes from sunlight, and following the doctor’s recommendations for scar care.”
Who is a suitable candidate?
Eyelid surgery is suitable for both women and men. It is an ideal solution for those affected by drooping eyelids, excess skin, or fat prolapse in the eyelid area.
