Center for retina treatment (vitreoretinal center)

Retinal diseases are among the most serious eye conditions that can lead to irreversible vision loss. This is because many retinal diseases can progress silently in their early stages without any symptoms, and it is only in advanced stages that impaired vision becomes apparent—by which time it cannot be completely restored, only slowed or halted. Timely diagnosis and prompt initiation of treatment are therefore crucial.

At the Eye Centre Prague, we have opened a new specialized center for the treatment of retinal diseases (the vitreoretinal center), where patients receive comprehensive care in one location—from diagnosis to subsequent conservative and surgical treatment.

ředitel OCP Adam Janek “There are currently very few facilities that specialize in comprehensive retinal treatment, and patients often have to wait up to six months for an appointment. Unfortunately, in cases of retinal diseases, timely diagnosis and initiation of treatment are crucial, as vision damage can be irreversible. In our center for retinal diseases, we have minimal waiting times for patients and the most modern diagnostic and treatment equipment,” states Adam Janek, Director of the Eye Centre Prague.

Retinal diseases

OCP léčba sítniceThe retina is the most important part of the eye, capturing the image that enters the eye and sending it to the brain via the optic nerve. The central part of the retina is called the macula, or yellow spot, which is the area of sharpest vision. The retina receives nourishment from the retinal arteries and vessels. Retinal diseases are always very serious and often irreversible, potentially leading to vision loss.

What retinal diseases can early diagnosis at the Eye Centre Prague Retina Center Reveal?

Diagnosis of retinal diseases using OCT angiography

At the Eye Centre Prague, we perform diagnostics using OCT Angiography. This revolutionary imaging method for the retina not only shows the condition of the individual layers of the retina but also assesses the FUNCTIONALITY of all its structures.

OCT Angiography can detect many eye diseases in their early stages, when patients may not yet experience any symptoms. This allows for timely initiation of treatment, helping to prevent irreversible vision damage.

Who and when should undergo special OCT Angiography?

  • Everyone over the age of 35. OCT Angiography can reveal many eye diseases in their early stages, when patients may not yet experience any symptoms.
  • The examination using OCT Angiography is quick, safe, and completely painless, without the need for intravenous contrast agents. The examination, including consultation of the results with a specialist, takes approximately 30 minutes.
  • The examination is not covered by public health insurance in the Czech Republic. The fee for this diagnostic test is 1,200 CZK, which includes eye scanning and a detailed report of the findings by a specialist.

Treatment of retinal diseases

Conservative treatment

Based on the results of the diagnostic examinations, the doctor will determine whether conservative treatment is possible or if further intervention is necessary.

Laser treatment

At the Eye Centre Prague, we also perform painless laser procedures. We use the latest retinal laser—commonly referred to in ophthalmology as the "yellow laser," which is much gentler on the eye structures compared to standard "green lasers." This allows us to treat conditions that may be too risky for other types of lasers. The procedure using the yellow laser is highly individualized, with the ability to adjust the laser template for maximum precision. In the Czech Republic, this gentle type of laser is quite rare due to its high acquisition cost.

Biological treatment of the retina (intraocular injections)

Biological treatment of the retina involves the administration of intraocular injections with anti-VEGF preparations. This treatment is targeted, highly effective, and timely application can halt or significantly slow the progression of the disease. We are a specialized (so-called center) facility that can provide biological treatment of the retina using anti-VEGF agents.

Retinal and vitreous surgery - Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV)

Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is an important surgical procedure for the retina and vitreous that is often sight-saving. It is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia in the operating room, and the patient goes home after the procedure. The "Pars plana vitrectomy" surgery at the Eye Centre Prague is fully covered by all health insurance providers.
