Life without glasses is great
Plastic surgery is often perceived by the public solely as a means of enhancing appearance and striving for perfection. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that procedures in the field of plastic and aesthetic medicine can have a significant impact on both the quality of life and health of patients. A typical example is upper and lower eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, which is not just a cosmetic procedure, but often a medical necessity.
The skin around the eyelids is the thinnest on the entire body, and due to constant blinking and eye movement, it is also highly stressed. As we age, the skin loses its elasticity, and the eyelid area is often the first to show visible signs of ageing. Sagging upper eyelid skin or fat pads can significantly restrict the field of vision. Some patients unconsciously tilt their heads back or constantly raise their eyebrows to “clear their view,” which can lead to muscle strain, headaches, or neck stiffness.
“Drooping eyelids are often associated with functional problems – a narrowed field of vision, eye fatigue, or headaches. In such cases, it’s no longer just a cosmetic issue but a condition that can significantly affect quality of life. Here, blepharoplasty is not only justified but often recommended,” explains Dr Lucie Frantlová, who performs eyelid surgeries at Eye Centre Prague.
Blepharoplasty, or plastic surgery of the upper or lower eyelids, is a relatively simple procedure performed under local anaesthesia and typically takes around 60 to 90 minutes. During the procedure, the surgeon removes excess skin and fat pads that may visually weigh down the eyes, create a tired appearance, and restrict the field of vision. After the surgery, the skin around the eyes tightens, and the eye area becomes more open.
“For most patients, recovery is very quick. Swelling and bruising usually subside within a few days, and stitches are removed around day five to seven. Patients generally return to their normal routine within one to two weeks,” says Dr Lucie Frantlová. She adds: “Post-operative care is important in the first few days – patients should avoid physical exertion, protect their eyes from sunlight, and follow the doctor's instructions regarding scar care.”

In addition to the clear medical benefits, eyelid surgery also has a significant psychological impact. Patients often report feeling fresher, more confident, and more youthful after the procedure. And this effect isn’t just subjective – studies show that a more “open gaze” can positively influence how others perceive us.
Sometimes, even a small surgical procedure can change not only how we see ourselves in the mirror but how we see the world. It relieves eye strain, improves sleep, and reduces headaches. It also transforms how we perceive ourselves – and that has a profound impact on overall quality of life.
With increasing life expectancy and greater attention to health, the number of patients seeking help for drooping eyelids is also rising. And it’s not just seniors – the first signs can appear as early as in one's forties or fifties.
“Today, it’s not only women who seek out the procedure. More and more men are coming to us as well, mainly due to functional issues – a narrowed field of vision, chronic eye fatigue, or headaches. Genetics, skin quality, lifestyle, and long-term sun exposure also play a role,” says Dr Lucie Frantlová.
Eyelid surgery is always preceded by a thorough examination and consultation with a doctor, who will assess whether the procedure is appropriate and what type of correction is needed. The consultation can be done with an ophthalmologist or a plastic surgeon.
At Eye Centre Prague, we offer patients a comprehensive approach – thanks to the combination of ophthalmic and plastic specialisations, we perform eyelid surgeries with consideration for both visual function and aesthetic outcome.
Plastic surgery is no longer just about beauty. Eyelid surgery is a clear example of how a minor procedure can significantly impact not only appearance but also health, comfort, and overall quality of life.
